Course Outline

Many of those who undertake interviewing have received no formal training. This one-day practical course will build skills and confidence, raising awareness of the legal framework and help you to plan and carry out interviews that are both effective and fair.

Course Audience

Anyone who needs to carry out selection interviewing as part of their job. You may be newly appointed with no interview experience or have been interviewing for some time, but need a refresher or have received no formal training.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

Write a clear role description
Develop an objective person specification
Describe briefly the main areas of current legislation pertaining to selection interviewing
List the main areas of discrimination likely to occur in selecting staff and detail methods to avoid these
Prepare an interview plan
List 4 types of questioning techniques and describe their role in an interview
Describe ways to enhance their listening skills
Put in place objective strategies for reaching decisions

Learning methods:

This course is a practical hands-on learning experience that will enable you to conduct effective interviews. We use group exercises and plenary sessions to draw out the main learning points and then have practice sessions to cement the learning and allow you to try out your new skills. The day also provides a chance to share experiences, learning from each other as well as from the trainer and course materials.
